A simple knot may feel stable but it can overtighten when your subject moves, increasing pressure where you do not want it. A reef knot (or square knot) is a quick and easy knot that will not overtighten. Once you tie it, it will not tighten any further, so if you have allowed a little give to begin with it will not cause restriction of circulation.

Pull both ends to tighten. It will tighten at the point you have tied it, and no further, no matter how hard you pull on it.
